LCB apprentice Becky Munro who works for Mott MacDonald has been awarded the apprentice of the year at the national Rail Staff Awards.

The awards took place on Saturday 7th October 2017 at The Ricoh Arena in Coventry and recognise the great work of the people who work in the rail industry.

Becky’s lecturer Vicky Patterson nominated her for the award and says “every assignment Becky submits is a pleasure to read and is always produced to the highest standard. Becky completed her Advanced Technical Apprenticeship gaining the highest possible grade, and her NVQ portfolio is held up as an example of best practice.

She recently passed her Technician Professional Review (EngTech MICE) and was so impressive at her interview, that she has been shortlisted by the Institution of Civil Engineers for the Jean Venables Medal. Becky was also named the ‘Best Apprentice Under 25’ at the Women in Construction Awards and ‘Best Apprentice Under 19’ at the BTEC Awards, her list of accolades just keeps on growing!”

Becky says: “I chose to complete an apprenticeship in civil engineering because of the positive impact that engineering has on society. I also get a great deal of personal satisfaction from seeing my designs become a reality. My engineering apprenticeship has enabled me to work alongside a range of experienced people, developing work based knowledge, whilst still studying one day a week at college. My apprenticeship is so varied and I really enjoy every aspect of it, once I complete the higher level apprenticeship, I hope to embark on the new degree level apprenticeship, so that I can keep progressing and learning.”

She is currently studying the Higher Apprenticeship in Sustainable Built Environment, specialising in Civil Engineering.

Becky, who is a Technician Permanent Way Engineer at Mott MacDonald in York, travels over 110 miles to attend Leeds College of Building one day a week!
