What did you study?
I studied a BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment at the College.
When did you finish?
I finished in 2012 and went on to undertake a BSc (Hons) Building Surveying at Leeds Beckett University.
What did you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed the range of modules on the course – I learned a great deal from a very basic level in the first year, leading on to more complex topics in the second year. I enjoyed the fact that there were no exams and I feel that I got a lot out of my experience. I also attended a number of interesting trips and additional courses that were organised by the college.
Your experience at College
My experience at college was very positive – it gave me confidence through my achievements and I was able to get involved in extracurricular roles such as Student Representative and Student Governor. I feel the course was pitched perfectly for school leavers and those returning to education (such as myself). The staff were always very supportive and were happy to answer questions and discuss ideas. I was extremely honoured to receive the student of the year award in my final year.
Your career since leaving?
Following being awarded a first class Degree and ‘the Hays Construction best dissertation’ award in 2017, I am now employed as a graduate Building Surveyor at Cushman & Wakefield (Global Real Estate firm) in Leeds and working towards my professional accreditation. I also have been on the RICS Matrics Yorkshire and Humber Committee for 5 years and help to plan and hold events for surveyors and other property professionals around Leeds.
You get out of things what you put in, so work hard, put yourself out there for things, volunteer and involve yourself and reap the rewards
