Leeds College of Building and one of its plastering students have been recognised at a prestigious award ceremony, held at Plaisterers’ Hall in London by The Plaisterers’ Company - the trade guild for plasterers in the UK.

The 19th Annual Plaisterers’ Training Awards reward a wide cross-section of the plastering and dry-lining trade, including plastering students and colleges and organisations actively involved in construction skills training. The Awards were presented by The Rt. Hon. the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley.

Leeds College of Building won the Harmer Trophy – an award for larger colleges that have achieved a top rating at academic level 3.

Plastering student Joel Broughton who has been a student at Leeds College of Building since 2013 was awarded second place in the ‘student of the year’ category which recognises individual excellence in achievement. Joel received a copy of Millars (the plasterers’ bible) and a cheque for £200.

Joel who was nominated by Lee Bogg, Curriculum Manager for the award, he said

“Joel needed hand reconstruction having suffered meningitis as a child.  He has not allowed this difficulty to hold him back and, having initially embarked on studies in brickwork, he transferred to the Plastering Department in 2016.  With the help of the team at Leeds College of Building and an adapted trowel, Joel has powered ahead in his studies and has produced work of the highest standard.”

Joel often thinks outside of the box and has tried many innovative ways of performing plastering tasks.  He has the ability to look at any given task and work out a process to overcome any difficulties in order to achieve his goal; this is truly inspiring to see.  We are convinced he will become a highly skilled plasterer.
