Q&A with Paddy Holmes

Meet Paddy Holmes, a former Bricklaying student at Leeds College of Building. We interviewed Paddy about his college journey, experience and what he would like to do in the future.

Who are you and what did you study?

Hi! I'm Paddy Holmes and I studied Bricklaying at Leeds College of Building.

Why did you choose to study at Leeds College of Building?

I chose to study at Leeds College of Building as it provided me with the fundamentals in Bricklaying and I was really interested in the course.

How did you apply for college?

I applied for Leeds College of Building via the website. My Secondary School helped me with my application form.

Did you visit an Open Day?

Yes I visited an open day and spoke to the course tutors.

What did you get up to on your course?

On my course I learnt a lot about the trade and participated in hands on learning in the workshops and classrooms. I put my head down and completed my work successfully, having a laugh with the people around me along the way.

What was your favourite thing about your course?

My favourite thing about my course was the support I had around me. There was always somebody nice who I could talk too, or cheer me up if needed.

I felt like I was a part of the trade, not just learning it. It was also great to make new friends - you’ve just got go for it and not be shy.

Overall, I just loved it!

Did you learn in the workshops and classroom?

Yes, I studied in both on my course. I was also taught, and studied for my Maths and English GCSE in the classrooms at college.

How was your course assessed?

On my course I was assessed through practical work, coursework and exams. I loved getting to build all sorts of different things! It kept me really interested and occupied.

Why would you recommend this course?

I would recommend this course, and career path as it’s great to be involved in something you love and are committed too. I really enjoy doing something and stepping back and saying ‘I did that’. Plus it’s also a great trade that can be done anywhere in the world!

Did you do any enrichment?

Yes, I participated in some extra learning in the workshops. I was taught about steel and sliding bricks during a talk.

Did you win any awards at college?

Yes! I won the Brickwork Student of the Year in 2024 and was invited to celebrate this achievement at the Building Industry Greats (BIG) Awards Ceremony.

What would be 3 top tips you could give to students applying to Leeds College of Building?

  1. Don’t be shy to ask for help.
  2. Make sure you are nice and respectful to others.
  3. Enjoy it and have a laugh!

Did you find your course challenging?

Sometimes, but I always wanted to learn and participate in any experiences I could, to understand better. I always say ‘take your time’ and ‘always accept a challenge’.

What do you hope to do in the future?

Now that I’ve finished college, I’m trying to get an Apprenticeship and college are helping me with this. I’m really determined to continue learning.
