Course overview

This Plumbing and Heating Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16.

Plumbers install, service and repair water supply, sanitation and heating systems. They also install bathroom suites including showers, toilets and basins.

Entry requirements

You should be aged 16 or over and ideally already be employed by a gas safe employer or have secured a work placement, however we may be able to help you with this.

You must have achieved a grade 3 or above in both English and Maths for this apprenticeship.

If you are aged 16-18 and you are unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.


What would apprentices learn at College?

  • The science behind plumbing and heating e.g. heat transfers, power, forces and pressure
  • How to cut, bend and solder copper pipe ready for installation and how to cut and join plastic pipe ready for installation
  • Understand and apply selection, planning, installation, testing, commissioning and de-commissioning, service, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair techniques on cold water, hot water, central heating, above ground drainage and rainwater systems
  • Understand and apply the principles of fuel combustion, ventilation and fluing arrangements within a domestic environment
  • How to install bathrooms, heating systems and waste sanitation systems and maintain showers, taps and valves

No matter what level you are currently working at, you will be expected to further your skills in English and maths.

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ.  Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.
