Course overview
This Transport Planning Apprenticeship is available to anyone aged over 16.
Transport planning technicians provide technical support to professional transport planners in the preparation, assessment and implementation of policies, plans and projects to manage and improve local, regional, national and international transport systems, services and their connections with land.
Transport planning technicians solve problems like traffic jams and find innovative, sustainable solutions to transport needs.
Transport planners come from a wide variety of backgrounds including mathematics, engineering and social sciences and work both for public sector authorities and private sector companies.

A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work, IT skills, innovative thinking.
Student profile
I’m an Apprentice Transport Planning Technician at Suffolk County Council (SCC) and Leeds College of Building (LCB) – studying for a BTEC Level 3 (equivalent to an A Level) and EngTech registration.
Before I started, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do or even what I could do. And if you’d told me that I would become a Transport Planner I probably would have said “what’s that?”
As a Transport Planner I work on policies, projects and plans to improve all types of transport systems – from cycle paths to bus routes, roads to rail – and everything in-between.
Since starting my apprenticeship I’ve gained a wealth of experience, made friends along the way and have a future bursting with opportunity. And most importantly, I have no regrets.

Entry requirements
4 GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C) including English, maths and science.
All applicants will be required to pass an assessment and be aged 16 or over, already be employed or have secured a work placement.
If you are aged 16-18 and unable to find an apprenticeship, you can apply for a study programme and switch over at any point when you do find one.
What would apprentices learn at College?
- The policy, legal and regulatory context within which transport planners work
- The collection and analysis of data, including new data obtained through transport and traffic fieldwork
- Transport and traffic models, forecasting and the principal analytical methods and software packages in general use
- The assessment of transport and traffic policies, plans and projects
Next steps
After completing this course there are a number of options available; depending on your final grade you could move onto an a higher education course including a HNC/HND, higher apprenticeship or a degree at university, or you could seek employment.

With the UK Government reforming the way apprenticeships are designed, funded and delivered, training for apprentices is now more rigorous and responsive to employers' needs.

From 1st April 2021 all employers are required to use the government apprenticeship service to secure funding for any apprentices they wish to employ. Apprentices will be unable to start their course at college without reserving funding.
