On 30 May 2023, over 300 extraordinary women and non-binary people came together to raise a barn in just 24 hours.

The incredible WOW (Women Of the World) Barn challenge was part of Leeds 2023 Year of Culture and a project Leeds College of Building was proud to support.

Throughout April, participants attended bootcamp training at the College to learn the essential carpentry and construction skills needed to build a barn from scratch - defying traditional gender roles and breaking barriers in the industry.

Attendees, including BBC Look North presenter Amy Garcia, spent time at the College learning new skills from specialist joinery tutors in the North Street Campus workshops.

After the spectacular achievement, the accessible WOW Barn on Cinder Moor in Leeds was used for three weeks for activities, gatherings, and a day-long WOW Barn Festival on 13 May.

The WOW Barn was made possible thanks to a partnership between Leeds 2023 and WOW, Leeds City Council, West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), and supported by Leeds College of Building.

The ambition is for women, girls, and non-binary people to realise their potential and break down barriers when contemplating a career in construction.
