A Leeds College of Building University Centre student has been announced as the winner of the prestigious Intelligent Transport Systems UK’s 2022 Early Careers Poster Award.

Josephine James, a 1st-year Transport Planning Technician Apprentice at Leeds College of Building, was announced the overall winner at the Intelligent Transport Systems (UK) Early Careers Forum event at ARUP's site in Solihull.

The competition set the challenge of creating a poster looking at key issues and topics within intelligent transport. Candidates were asked to focus on:

  • Transport – A data mine
  • Multi-modal journeys – An ever-expanding dimension
  • Perception and Human Factors – shaping the mobility of the future

Josephine’s poster on Perception & Human Factors - Shaping the Mobility of the Future was entitled Think Sustainable Travel. The entry was declared the winner by a panel of three judges who praised its relevance to her chosen theme, creativity, and effectiveness in conveying a message.

Fellow 1st-year Transport Planning Technician Apprentice Jessica Davies was also a runner-up in the competition.

Dr Paul E. Firmin, Leeds College of Building University Centre Lecturer in Transport Planning, said:

“We should congratulate both of these excellent young students for representing the College, their respective Employers (Staffordshire County Council & Bryan G. Hall - Leeds), as well as themselves.

“The success of the Transport Planning Technician Apprentices goes from strength to strength, which is a reflection of the superb team of lecturers, assessors, and managers involved in apprenticeship studies at Leeds College of Building, so a big ‘well done’ to one and all.”

Max Sugarman, Chief Executive of ITS (UK), said:

“Many congratulations to Josephine on becoming our 2022 Poster Competition Winner. The award is much-deserved – Josephine’s work focused on the complexity of human factors around intelligent mobility, looking at how transport providers need to consider different communities throughout their work. It demonstrated some complex issues, in a creative and clear manner.

“Thanks too to all those who submitted entries, all of which were of a very high quality. The competition has really shone a light on the knowledge, dynamism and ability of the next generation of intelligent transport professionals.”

Josephine said:

“Thank you so much for the opportunity and the consideration from the panel. To be selected the winner against such fantastic competition is an honour. What an exciting start to 2023!”

Josephine and Jessica now have their posters published on the ITS(UK) website and Highways News. Both students also won ITS(UK) pin badges and book tokens.
