Head of University Centre
Among Leeds College of Building’s specialist staff is newly appointed Head of University Centre, Sarah Sunderland.
Sarah is an experienced architect and female role model for women in construction. Only 15 per cent of the construction industry in the UK are women according to ONS figures, but this is something the College is working hard to change by driving equality and diversity initiatives.
Sarah leads higher-level Architecture, Engineering, and Construction programmes and supports the development of Level 3 courses, including T levels. Over the last five years, higher-level courses have grown to represent a significant proportion of the College’s provision; around 80% of delivery in the new Leeds College of Building University Centre (UC) now covers Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships, Higher and Degree Apprenticeships.
With a background in architecture, Sarah is well-placed to lead the department. Sarah studied a BTEC National Diploma in Construction & Civil Engineering before progressing to a BA (Hons) Architectural Studies, a Diploma in Architecture, and a Master’s degree in Architectural Professional Management & Practice from the University of Huddersfield.
Sarah gained extensive skills in architectural firms such as SDA and Spawforths, Leeds, before co-founding DMS Architecture in 2009. With nearly two decades of professional experience, Sarah has worked with various sectors, including housing, health care, education, retail and commercial.
Sarah’s achievements include a sustainability award from Wakefield MDC for the National Coal Mining Museum and Wakefield Civic Society Awards for Parklands, Wakefield (Best Residential Development winner and Best Refurbishment commendation).
In 2010, Sarah attained a Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector and began working as a Higher Education Lecturer in Construction & the Built Environment at Leeds College of Building. Sarah progressed to Curriculum Manager before moving into her current Head of Department role.
Sarah is passionate about supporting students and working in partnership with staff. This includes managing a new Level 6 BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering Site Management Degree Apprenticeship in partnership with Leeds Beckett University, and a Degree Apprenticeship in Construction Quantity Surveying with London South Bank University (LSBU).
Sarah is just one of highly qualified female lecturers and managers at Leeds College of Building, with first-hand experience of working in vital construction specialism.
